Letter from Mark's daughter Laurel

January 26, 1993

Dad,

I've read that a person should have a role model or hero to pattern their life after. I've wanted one but never have found anyone I could identify with. Someone asked me about it the other day and I've been thinking about it since and decided that I do have a role model. It's my dad.

My dad is kind. He is very generous and giving and helps those in need. He would never harm anyone or put another down to build himself.

My dad works hard. I've never met anyone who works as hard as he. He never gives up when things get tough and sees obstacles as only something to overcome. He taught his children the value of a hard day's work.

My dad is honest. He is honest as a neighbor, a friend or as a businessman. His integrity is solid, not varying with the situation.

My dad is humble. He acknowledges his weaknesses and doesn't try to cover them up or make excuses. He doesn't try to impress the world or make himself look good. He is simply himself.

My dad loves to learn. I always remember him with a book in his hands or by his bedstand. He reads about politics, history, people, flowers, birds, Indians, the gospel, etc. He doesn't learn to impress others with his knowledge but to more fully understand and enjoy his world.

My dad is a teacher. I remember the ideas, principles, values, and stories he taught. He still, as in my childhood, gathers his family around to teach a message of truth. Like the greatest of all teachers, he teaches by example, never asking anything of anyone he is not willing to do himself.

My dad is wise. Many people are intelligent, many are educated, but few possess the gift of wisdom. My dad has this rare gift that only comes from a blend of intelligence, experience, contemplation and listening to the Lord.

As I've thought about what I could give you for your birthday, I think most about what you have given me. I thank you. They are the greatest treasures of my life.

In return I will try to follow in your footsteps and live the principles you have taught me. I will do my best to honor you, my father, and my father in heaven.
